A.) Autumn as a season is supposed to represent the preservation of life and basic needs, though my parents really just chose my name because it reminded them of the fall colors when the trees turn. My middle name, though, is what they chose based on its significance; "Mika" means beautiful girl in Russian, and also Mika Hakkinen is their favorite Formula 1 driver. I like my full name a lot, and really the only thing I have against it is the stares I get whenever anyone mentions anything about seasons, or that people who don't know me well will call me amber, fall, spring, winter, or summer. Since Mika is a unisex name, my parents probably would have named me Mika if I was a boy.
B.) In Lord of the Flies, Ralph seems to represent the kind leaders that want to help others and utilize resources to build a better city/state/nation/world, but don't have the strength to make hard decisions or to retain their power. Just like many of these leaders use intellectual solutions to solve problems, Ralph respects Piggy and tries to help convey Piggy's ideas to the tribe of boys. Ralph is a very empathetic character who seems to try to solve each person's problems individually, just like the leaders that want to help each individual in order to boost the whole group. Golding seems to state through Ralph's character and Simon's that sometimes humans value physical strength over mental strength, and that the strength of a few individuals can make a whole group stronger. This is displayed as Jack slowly replaces Ralph as chief through his entertaining displays of brute power bringing them meat/fire and keeping them safe from the "beast".

A. The name Rachel is Hebrew from the bible. I'm not sure about the entire story, but I know Rachel in the bible was the favorite of Jacobs wives. It is representative in my family because its catholic and my great grandmother was named Rachel. My fathers side of the family however, is English, so he was impartial to English names like Harry, which makes me very thankful I got Rachel because Harry Thomas is just not it, even though he still tried to stick my brother with the name. B. The name from the story I want to focus on is Jacks, and how he strives for power. The power struggle between Jack and Ralph at the beginning, and the obvious choice of Ralph as a natural leader with his name makes a statement about how mankind is power hungry. Jack as the less helpful leader, because the power quickly started affecting his human nature, similar to power struggles within actual governments, that end up with someone taking over and turning it into places like dictatorships. The fact that his name even means replacement, shows he was not content if he was ever put in second in command it was in his nature to try and take control because he was so focused on it. I believe this represents Golding's opinion on government, and how no one will ever completely agree, because there is always someone who wants more power, even at times when they're at the top of the chain of command.

My name is Nicholas. I do not have an idea of why my name is Nicholas other than my parents just liking the name. I do like my name because I do not meet many people with the same name as me. If I was born a girl, I would have no idea what my parents would name me.
In LOTF, Piggy represents the character who is smart and nice but is left out by the others. Piggy's name also represents his weight and how he is made fun of for it. Golding is saying how the Piggy is not appreciated for his intelligence but it is the ones who are bigger and stronger who are the most appreciated.

A)My name is Emily, and it means to strive or excel or rival. It also means hardworking. It's a German name. My parents named me after my Grandma. I do like my name a lot. I just think it's pretty and it means hardworking and excel. Which is true... But my parents couldn't tell if I was a girl or a boy because I wouldn't show them. Until I had to be turned around. But my parents were so sure I was a girl so they never talked about boy names. So I would have been nameless until my parent's thought of one. B)Piggy is a really smart character. In fact the smartest one out of all of them. But he's not listened to. He's told to shut up when he has an idea. We see this a lot in real life. When people are smart and they have ideas but they can't share with others because no one wants to listen. In the book it's hard for piggy to stand up for himself so he just doesn't try to speak up. All the other boys want to do is hunting and not figure out any other way of how they are going to survive. Like not taking the time to build a shelter or make a campfire. They are worried about who's the leader. So piggy is smart enough to think about other things. This is seen is society all the time. This represents that we worry about stuff that's not going to help us in the long run.

The way I got my name is actually a pretty funny story. My parents could not decide on a name before I was born because they wanted something unique, like my brothers names. Right after I was born the nurses asked my parents what m name was and they said they didn't have one. Long story short, my parents pretty much had all the nurses in the hospital right name suggestions on a white board until one lady came in and wrote down her grand-daughters name, Marin. My parents liked the name because it was unusual and it was German, and most of my family is German. In fifth grade I looked up the meaning of my name and found that the root means ocean, like a marina. I love my name because I have only met a few people with the same name as me. According to my mom, if I was born a boy they would have gave me a family name, Angus Russell McKinney. They got the name Angus from one of my middle names Augusta.
I think Simon represents the good in society. Just like the meaning of his name, he listens to others and tries to keep them happy and positive. I think that in society there is a group of people that sacrifice themselves for everyone else. An example would be volunteers for charities and churches, and those who put others before themselves. Simon always helped others believe they would make it back home and off the island, the boys needed someone to give them that hope, and even if he didn't think he would make it, he let others believe they would. William Golding is trying to make the statement that even in the worst moments, there are people in society that can still bring happiness and that will be there for you.

a) My mom read about my name in a history book when she was in tenth grade. After I was born, my parents looked it up and it means free and brave, so they stuck with it. My middle name is Shea, and my mom's name is Sheila Janae, so they just joined the two together. If I was a boy, I would have been William Morton the 10th because it's a family name, but my brother has that name now. I like my name a lot, but it's super super common today.
b) Jack represents the greedy people of society who will take whatever they want. Jack meaning "supersede" makes sense because he took Ralph's position of power through violence. Golding is saying that society holds an inner savagery in everyone. Jack is still a young boy, so if his selfishness and power-hungriness can effect him this much as a teen, it will be much worse when he's an adult.

Post by Jack Rueschhoff on Apr 10, 2020 17:21:47 GMT
A) Jack, according to an old sheet of paper I found in my closet, is an old English name, supposedly meaning 'God is Gracious'. It was derived from the name John in Medieval England and became so common it could even just have been used to refer to 'man'. Of course, neither of my parents knew this when they picked it. My mom thought it was simple and strong and she liked the sound of it, so it just happened. I am however named after my grandfather in my middle name: Wayne. My mom's dad's name was Wayne, but he, unfortunately, died before I was born. She wanted a part of him to continue, so she made my middle name Wayne. My last name, Rueschhoff, is German, but we think it was changed to that when my family emigrated from Czechoslovakia into Germany. We aren't certain, but we believe that our name used to be something close to Ružička (pronounced roo - ji - ch - kah), but it is impossible to know for sure. It doesn't have a direct translation, but a native Czech speaker says he thinks it just means roses. B) In the novel, Piggy is given the nickname Piggy due to the hatred that many of the others feel for him. However, the name has more significance than that. Pigs are surprisingly smart creatures. They can think much harder to solve problems than other species. However, they are usually much physically weaker and fatter than most other creatures. This is shown in the novel as well, due to Piggy's many handicaps. What Golding is trying to say about people like Piggy in society, at least in his time, is that despite any amount of knowledge you have, if you don't have the initiative or power, you cannot rule.

The significance of my name is that its a family name (last name) and it is also an Irish and Indian. My parents chose this name because it honored everyone in the family not just one person. There is no meaning behind my name. I love my name because its not a name you hear all the time. If I was born the opposite sex my name would have been Anthony after my great grandfather. Simon is the mostly introverted group of people that also wants to figure a way out to help people, but is scared of them as well. The statement Golding is making about human nature is that we need the kind introverted people to keep us from doing stupid stuff. These people are the people that have the right mindset when coming to most things and have the ability to persuade people into not doing the stupid stuff that they want to do.

Post by Asher Gettings on Apr 10, 2020 17:34:09 GMT
My whole name is Asher Keith Gettings. In Hebrew, Asher means joyful or happy. My parents chose this name because when I was born Life was kind of rough. So my parents were hoping I could bring some joy. Keith was the name of my paternal grandfather who had passed away a couple months before I was born. I do like my name because it is a constant reminder to try and remain positive. My parents didn't start looking for names until they discovered I was a boy.
The character of Simon represents people who are supportive and helpful. Through the character of Simon, Golding is trying to say that people of a positive and supportive disposition are often those who bear the brunt of our collective abuse. Whether they are famous historical figures (such as Martin Luther King jr.) or just people who are positive and supportive every day, they are often negatively impacted by those who they try and help.

Post by Katarina Garcia on Apr 10, 2020 17:42:51 GMT
a) My full name is Katarina Pryde Garcia. The reason I have this name is because my mom fell in love with it after watching the movie "Overboard." The movie some romantic comedy with a legend about a girl named Katerina and she just liked the ring of it. I was also named this, however, because of some X-men superhero named Kitty Pryde. Before my nickname was Kat, everyone used to call me Kitty and my middle name is Pryde so I was essentially Kitty Pryde. In Czech, my name means pure. I like my name because it is super unique and I have never met another Katarina. If I was a boy, my name would have been Anthony. b) Piggy represents the intelligent people in the world who's voice is never heard and are judged before seen. Piggy is very collected and intelligent, however, he gets bullied and is seen as the more irrelevant character of the book because he is heavier. He always has reasonable and smart ideas but everyone outvoices him and he gets shut out. Piggy is similar to a pig because most people underestimate and overlook pigs. They see a pig and just see this large, smelly animal that does not seem intelligent. In reality, pigs are smarter than any other domestic animal. However, his name also foreshadows what might come. The pigs in the book are innocent creatures who are ripped about by the boys as their desire to kill and bloodlust overcomes them. This might foreshadow what could happen to Piggy farther along in the book. Through Piggy, Golding is trying to draw sympathy from the reader and show how cruel humankind can be. He is trying to show that people don't care about how smart you are or how helpful you can be, instead, they judge you on your appearance and if you are different from the rest of the group. The way the boys bully Piggy demonstrates the evil inside of them and the evil that exists inside of all of us.

A)To me, my name is a description that is the significance but I find it silly to define someone by something the parents did. My name isn't significant by what it means (gift of god) because I don't care about that. There are name stereotypes Karens, Yolanda, Ethan but having a name won't dictate who u are. What u do with it is. If we look for meaning in the smallest of places we lose ourselves from the big picture. B)Piggy represents someone who while rare is an honest soul trying to help the group, not themselves. the reason his name is significant is cause it shows how serious these people are taken. He tries to help but can't scream the loudest. he gets dissed on his weight, looks, and brain. A truly kind soul in a room of selfish people. he tries his best but is shut down and shunned. You should be able to name one person like this but you cant for the same reasons I've displayed here.

A: my name is not particularly significant and there is not much of a backstory to it. My parents chose it because they like the name and thought that it sounded good. I do believe that The name Owen means young warrior in Gaelic and because of my family's Irish background I speculate that they might have chosen my name because of that. I think my name is great, I don't care about it to much but i would never change it. If I was born a female my name would have likely Ben Lilly.
B: in lord of the flies Ralph represents, in part, the government and the people who try to enforce rule and law. and Ralph's declining grip on authority and power is a reference to all governments and how there power is constantly in check by the ruled.

a. My mom had a student named Madison and I guess the name always stuck with her. There is no particular meaning or significance to Madison. However, since I am half Korean, my parents wanted to keep some of that culture in my name. My middle name is Sue Bin which means to polish the beauty. In the first half, Sue means beauty and elegance. Whereas in the second half, Bin means to refine something, so together the meaning is to refine or polish the beauty. I quite like since it is so unique and my whole name consists of two different languages. No one really has my full name which is cool to think about that I am the only Madison Sue Bin Park. If I was a boy my parents were talking about naming me Indigo which I do not like at all. Indigo sounds like a dog's name and definitely, not a boy's name so I do not know what they were thinking. Overall my mom was super confident that I was going to be a girl, so they weren't set on any boy names for me.
b. Piggy is almost the "underdog" of the book. In most stories and movies the underdog usually becomes the most liked and listened too almost like a hero. So far in the book, the other boys pick on Piggy and do not really listen to all the good ideas Piggy has to get off of the island. He is being overpowered by the older and more "wiser" boys and his bright ideas are not being heard. Honestly, if the boys had listened to Piggy, in the beginning, they might have already been rescued by now. Golding is stating that society has lots of different stereotypes and that Piggy represents the understated geniuses.

My name is Gina and it doesn't exactly have a big importance except for the fact that i was named after a cartoon character that my mom liked. My parents have told me the story a lot and the reason they picked that name for me was because the character was a strong and determined girl. The meaning of my name is "Queen" and it is of Italian origin, which is really cool because my family is also Italian. The more common form of Gina would be Regina but my dad didn't like the idea of me having to go by a nickname. This does go into the next thing that I do like my name but I wish my full name was Regina because that would be a lot cooler and all of my family on my mom's side has a long name that the shortened like Jacqueline to Jackie. Last, if I was born a boy my name would have been Jacob because my parents just like the "j" names or ones that sound like it.
Ralph represents a fair leader in society that lacks the needed skills to control their people. He tends to be separation of peace and chaos. Golding is talking about human nature through Ralph's character because this fair leader is the ideal person to lead because of their ideas and morals. However, they lack the needed sternness to control their people because they are the order in humanity while the people become savages.

Post by Vanessa Antolakis on Apr 10, 2020 17:59:33 GMT
The name 'Vanessa' has a Greek origin of the word butterfly and my dad, being from Greece, thought that this would be a good name. Additionally, my mom had always liked the name and she is Polish and there is a tradition in Poland that all girl's name should end with an A, and the name 'Vanessa' worked with that too. My middle name is Ann and that comes from my grandmother on my dad's side who is named Ann. My last name, Antolakis, is a Greek name and it is actually short for Antonomanolakis, but my parents shortened it when I was born because it was very hard for anyone in the U.S to pronounce. I do like my name because it is unique in the way that it is derived from Ancient Greece, and it is an international name, so people all around the world have/know it. If I was born of the opposite sex, my parents would have named me Michael, which is my younger brother's name, because they had always planned to name their son Michael and if I was born a boy first, I would have been named that. Piggy is a character in this novel that symbolizes the intelligence group on this island. He is very smart and tries to come up with ideas for the boys to survive on the island, but he is mistreated by many of the boys due to his weight, which is the reason why they call him Piggy. However, Golding named him Piggy because pigs are smart animals, just as Piggy is the smartest character. Through the character of Piggy, Golding is trying to say that it is in human nature to look at the physical aspect of things rather than the mental because the boys do not respect Piggy at all even though he is much smarter than the rest of them. The boys respect the leaders like Jack, who look and act tough and violent, when in reality, Jack is the one who causes the most problems for the boys and will get them into trouble on the island.
