“Because when he was around, the oxygen seeped out of the room. My chest tightened and I couldn't draw enough air: I'd stand there, gasping in my own little airless bubble of atmo- sphere. But even when he wasn't around, he was. He was there in the hand-washed and ironed clothes on the cane-seat chair, in the warm slippers left outside my door, in the wood already burning in the stove when I came down for breakfast. Everywhere I turned, I saw signs of his loyalty, his goddamn unwavering loyalty.” (Page 89)
This quote shows guilt how Amir felt about Hassan, even when Hassan Forgive him the guilty that Amir feels didn’t allow him enjoy the moments with Hassan, because he never apologized and never accepted or told the truth. His physical body was affected, because when your souls don’t have peace, your body can’t too, This is like something that eat you slowly.

"I watched Hassan get raped," I said to no one. Baba stirred in his sleep. Kaka Homayoun grunted. A part of me was hoping someone would wake up and hear, so I wouldn't have to live with this lie anymore.
I believe this is an example of guilt and redemption because he realized that he should of done something.

"Baba came right out and asked. "Did you steal that money? Did you steal Amir's watch Hassan" This is a example of guilt because it shows how baba felt when he seen the car.

“I’ll never forget the way baba said that, the pain in his plea, the fear”pg (107) chapter 9
This is an example of guilt and redemption motif. The guilt for seeing his dad crying after he caused a big problem by making his dad believe that Ali and Hassan stole money and a watch that Amir got for his birthday. Moreover after this happened he begged and begged Ali and Hassan to not leave the house. And that made amor feel guilt and that he will never forget the way he was crying, saying it in a way that some guilt will stay inside of him.

"Then I saw Baba do something I had never seen him do before: He cried. It scared me a little, seeing a grown man sob. Fathers weren’t supposed to cry. ‘Please,’ Baba was saying, but Ali had already turned to the door, Hassan trailing him. I’ll never forget the way Baba said that, the pain in his plea, the fear." This quote shows the common motif of friendship. It's shown throughout most of the book, especially between him and his father. His father was sad which made him become upset due to how close their bond is. His father crying made him feel uncomfortable and scared him which proves how close their bond is.

This is an example of Guilt and redemption. More so guilt because Amir lies awake thinking about when he watched Hassan and did nothing about it. His redemption is, saying it out loud in front of others but while they're asleep so no one actually knows.

"He knew i had betrayed him and yet he was rescuing me once again, maybe for the last time." (Hosseini 105)
this falls under the friendship motif. real friends protect each other, however amir knows that his friends might give up on him if he doesn't stop what he's doing and change. hassan didn't steal any money or a watch, but he took the fall for amir.

"School gave me an excuse to stay in my room for long hours. And for a while, it took my mind off what had happened that winter, what I had let happen. For a few weeks, I preoccupied myself with gravity and momentum, atoms and cells, the Anglo-Afghan wars, instead of thinking about Hassan and what had happened to him. But, always, my mind returned to the alley. To Hassan's brown corduroy pants lying on the bricks. To the droplets of blood staining the snow dark red, almost black." (pg. 91)
This follows the motif on guilt because Amir is trying to keep his mind occupied so he doesn't think about that night and how he did not help his friend. Unfortunately, even though he does these things, the guilt finds it's way back.

"I wish he'd give me the punishment I craved, (Hosseini 92). This is an example of the guilt/redemption motif because it shows Amir attempting to get redemption through some sort of punishment by Hassan; He thought maybe then his guilt would finally disappear and that everything would return to normal. This is significant because Hassan never gave him the punishment he sought, and as a result, Amir continues to be eaten by guilt many years afterward.

*full quote because the post seems to have deleted it "I wish he'd give me the punishment I craved, so maybe I'd finally sleep at night. Maybe then things could return to how they used to be between us," (Hosseini 92).

"I watched Hassan get raped...I was going to get away with it." (Hosseini 86) This is an example of guilt and redemption. Amir is overcome by the guilt he is feeling and wants someone to hear his confession and become angry at him. He feels the only way that he will feel better is if everyone becomes angry at him and punishes him for what he did. Though he tried he didn't have enough courage to actually tell anyone face to face.

"Hassan serving drinks to Assef and Wali from a silver platter. The light winked out, a hiss and a crackle, then another flicker of orange light: Assef grinning kneading Hassan in the chest with a knuckle." (Hosseini100)
This is during Amir's birthday party when they are setting fireworks off at night. between crackles of light, this is what Amir sees. This continuous discrimination from Assef towards Hassan is summed up for Amir in this scene. This is the latest time (so far..) that we have seen this discrimination.

" I Ran because I was a coward. I was afraid of Assef and what he would do to me and I was afraid of getting hurt." This shows Guilt due to how he feels guilty after he ran away when that event happened.

"After that kite tournament, he came home a little bloodied and his shirt was torn. I asked him what had happened and he said it was nothing, that he'd gotten into a little scuffle with some kids over the kite." (Hosseini PDF 67)
The motif is for discrimination but also for Kite running, The significant for this quote/motif is that in that moment Amir knew what happened to Hassan in the alley and that quote describes how was Hassan after the accident/rape that happened
